Ever tied a string around your finger to remember something, only to wonder hours later what the heck that string was for?
If your brain's been a bit foggy lately, try these tips for sharpening your memory.
Forego the late show—hit the sack earlier.
Your brain functions better when you get a good night's sleep. On the flip side, lack of sleep can muddle your memory. (See Get to Sleep—Even When You're Stressed for sleep strategies.)
Take a hike.
A brisk, 30-minute walk each day will improve circulation and blood flow to your brain. The better the blood flow, the more oxygen your brain cells get.
Play mind games.
When was the last time you tackled a brain teaser, played a challenging board game, or solved a crossword puzzle? Turn off the TV once in a while and exercise your brain.
Note to self: Remember!
Keep a reminder journal, make lists, and leave things in the same place every time. Studies show that repetition and taking notes help boost your memory.
Indulge your passions.
Pick up that paintbrush or join the community band. Pursuing hobbies helps stretch your mind—and if those hobbies involve others, all the better. The more social you are, the more likely you are to retain your memory.
Slooow down.
Life's daily stresses can gang up on your mind and make you forget. Manage your stress with meditation, deep relaxation techniques, or five minutes of peace and quiet.
