It's easy to grab food when and where you can during your busy day. But what you eat doesn't just affect your waistline—the right foods also can give you lasting brainpower.

Keep alert, focused, and creative with the right foods to feed your brain. Add the following foods to your diet, and get ready to reap the benefits:

Omega-3 Infused Foods

Omega-3 is a fatty acid that actually helps improve your brainpower. It also can fight depression and help you concentrate. Many Americans don't get enough of this vital supplement in their diet. You can incorporate omega-3s into your diet by eating a serving of one or two of the following foods daily: walnuts, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, or flaxseeds (or flaxseed oil). Also, try to eat fish at least twice a week; salmon, trout, and tuna are especially good for you.

Water and Green Tea

What you drink is just as important as what you eat, especially when it comes to brainpower. Your brain is actually more than 80 percent water, and this water needs to be constantly replenished. You should drink eight to 10 glasses of water a day to keep your mind and body hydrated.

To keep your senses alert and your creativity levels high, drink non-caffeinated green tea. Its high levels of antioxidants will give your brain a natural boost of energy.

Complex Carbohydrates and Fiber

If there is one group of foods your brain loves the most, it's carbohydrates. The steady energy that carbs give you is perfect for keeping your brain active all day long. Fruits and veggies contain carbs, as well as natural sugars, to help your brain function better. Avocadoes, bananas, broccoli, oranges, peas, potatoes, and spinach all fuel the brain with healthy glucose and complex carbohydrates. Add fruits or veggies to the side of every meal, or eat a serving as a snack during the afternoon, when your retention and attention levels begin to fade.

When choosing sources of carbs, be sure to pick healthy, fiber-rich whole-wheat breads and pastas, natural oatmeal, and wheat germ. Also, try taking Metamucil®, a great source of 100 percent natural psyllium fiber. It's easy to drink three 8-oz. glasses of Metamucil daily, and it comes in three tasty flavors: Orange, Berry Burst!, and Pink Lemonade.

To keep your brain active and sharp, cut out sugary, fatty foods from your diet and replace them with these brain-friendly foods. Your mind will thank you.
