You know you feel great after a good night's sleep. Quality shut-eye is crucial for a healthy body, energy, and even problem-solving skills. Unfortunately, sleep can become difficult when you're stressed—which is when you need it most! Here are a few tips for getting to sleep when the pressure's on.
Take a breath
While lying in bed, take a deep breath. As you breathe out, close your eyes and imagine your worries and stresses leaving your body. Concentrate on relaxing your entire body, from your temples to your toes.
Sanctuary of sleep
Leave work (and the stress that comes with it) at the door, which means no quick phone calls to the office or checking your email from the bedroom. Create a soothing atmosphere for sleep by eliminating distractions and infusing your room with wonderful smells, indulgent fabrics, and peaceful lighting.
Vacation from your life
You don't have to go far from home to enjoy the benefits of a vacation. If you're losing sleep to stress, spend a night at a nearby hotel. A break from your life and a new setting may be the key to getting much-needed rest.
Get out
When you exercise outside, you get a double dose of natural "sleep aids": fresh air and increased circulation. But don't exercise too close to bedtime. Finish your workout at least three hours before you hit the sack.
Create a routine
Make the act of "going to bed" an enjoyable ritual with a cup of tea or a warm bath. Not only can a ritual make it easier for you to sleep, but it can also provide comfort in times of stress.
Give up
Trying too hard to get to sleep can cause more stress and an even more restless night. Sometimes, it's just not going to happen. If you haven't fallen asleep after 30 minutes of tossing and turning, get out of bed and do something. But don't pay the bills or make a grocery list!
